A novel polymeric material based on carboxymethyl amylopectin grafted with poly (acrylic acid) adapted for use as selective flocculant for iron ore comprising of general formula 1 hereunder: wherein the highly branched polysaccharide amylopectin from maize was functionalized by carboxymethylation, followed by grafting of poly (acrylic acid). The anionic graft copolymeric flocculant in particular carboxymethyl amylopectin grafted with poly (acrylic acid) is found to be an efficient flocculating agent for selective removal of iron ore from inorganic gangues. The flocculant is biodegradable and hence eco-friendly, can be developed by simple and cost-effective technique. It would be efficient even at lower dosages, would be effective compared to commercially available flocculants and thus would be cost-efficient. It is observed to have highly shear stable and controlled biodegradable.
