A method of automatically selecting superior quality fruits comprises of placing a mix of superior quality and inferior quality fruits (2) in a row along the length of a conveyor belt (1) travelling at constant velocity; analyzing frame by frame the images from cameras (3) positioned strategically to capture the images of each passing fruit (2) on the conveyor belt (1); determining colour, texture and shape features of each fruit and feeding the data to a decision rule generation module for fruit condition assessment; simultaneously generating a depth map from motion vector calculation in two degrees of freedom to calculate the shape and position coordinates of the fruit; judging the quality of the fruit by segmentation of the image for texture analysis employing super pixel classification method; detecting fruits of inferior quality and dislodging them from the conveyor be and allowing only the fruits of superior quality to move with the belt (1) for their collection at the final stage.
