In recent years, Indian government has shown a major concern over the solid waste management in order to protect human health, environment and fuel resources. This invention addresses this issue by proposing a smart solid waste management system for Indian municipalities. This low-cost, dynamic, energy efficient and easily deployable embedded system is proposed to effectively manage solid waste in various areas of a city/village. A kit comprising of a micro-controller, a pair of ultrasonic sensors and global system for mobile communication (GSM) module is installed into the garbage container which can sense the level of garbage in the container and automatically informs the municipality authority about the same whenever the container gets full or empty. At the same time, the kit stores and updates the status of the container on a cloud storage for further analysis. The data analysis on the cloud dataset through diverse Machine Learning (ML] algorithms provides a dashboard view via web application to infer the waste collection process. Furthermore, it provides recommendations about required quantity of garbage containers in a particular area, requirement of man- power and optimized route for collecting garbage from the containers. The statistical results depict that the proposed system efficiently addresses the aforementioned concerns of the Indian government.
