Thermal insulating behaviour of brick made from clay soil with Hollow Silica Spheres (HSS) has been investigated. HSS is a specially prepared insulating material by reusing waste thermocol as a polystyrene templates and sodium silicate as a silicate precursor instead of tetra ethyl ortho silicate. In addition to HSS, the reduction in firing time of the brick will provide cooler environment to the interior space of the building. Inorder to reduce the firing time of the brick without affecting its strength and performance, characteristics of clay material used in clay brick industry due to the addition of Sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) and Egg Shell Powder (ESP) has been investigated. Mixtures of clay soil and SCBA in proportions of 5-35% by weight, along with 3% of ESP were uniformly homogenized and bricks were sintered at 1000 -1100°c. Bricks made with 25% replacement of clay soil by SCBA attained the compressive strength of 24.08 MPa at unfired condition. In that proportion, the reduction in thermal conductance upto 0.2 W/m2K has been achieved by adding 5g of HSS and this result revealed that the brick becoming an energy efficient and thermal insulating brick with suitable strength for construction purpose.
