The main aim of the present is to evaluate the anti-thyroid potential of Hydroalcoholic seed extract of Linum usitatissimum upon hypothyroidism induced swiss albino rats. Linum usitatissimum belong to the family of Linaceae which is a protein rich food, consists of lignans and linolenic acids, claimed to increase the levels of T3,T4 and TSH to normal. In the present study, hypothyroidism is induced by PTU ( Propyl thiouracil, 6mg/kg, body wt, P.O) and L-thyroxine (2µg/ml, P.O) served as standard drug. The animals are treated with Linum usitatissimum seed extracts (LUSE 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg, P.O).Parameters like body wt, serum and lymph levels of T3, T4 and TSH are estimated. In the present study, simultaneous administration of PTU along with LUSE 200mg/kg P.O has shown increased levels of T3, T4 and TSH, which are comparable with that of the normal and L-thyroxine treated group. Histopathological studies also revealed the same result. Anti-thyroid potential is evident that the levels of T3, T4, TSH and body weight increased upon administration of LUSE 200mg/kg P.O. Further molecular studies are required in order to identify the Anti- thyroid mechanism of Linum usitatissimum.
