Exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure are directed towards a system and method for reinforcing powder particles using friction stir processing. The method includes defining a centreline, an advancing side portion and retreating side portion on a base material surface and positioning the advancing side portion defined on the base material under a friction stir tool. The method further includes defining a pin region on the advancing side portion defined on the base material, and making a plurality of grooves comprising a constant width and a varying depth using friction stir tool on the at least one of the advancing side portion defined on the base material and within the pin region defined on the base material; and injecting a reinforcing material in to the plurality of grooves.
