The invention is based on the control of deterioration of stored food commodities which takes place due to infestation of storage pests viz. insects and fungi. Keeping in mind the side effects of synthetic pesticides; some essential oils of higher plants belonging to different families were assessed against four stored product insects. A composition comprising essential oils is made by blending of Melaleuca leucadendron L. and Carum carvi L. completely protects stored wheat and chickpea for two years from four stored insects and also inhibit the aflatoxin Bl production in stored wheat as well as effective against toxigenic strains of Aspergillusflavus.
