The invention relates to a process for carrying-out an elevation digital model of a geographical area. According to the invention, the process consists in making a project (B) of data gathering by using a LIDAR sensor mounted on an unassisted air-vehicle (UAV) provided with positioning equipments of GNSS type and inertial type, IMU, and establishing the recording area, the calibration (A) of the LIDAR sensor position in relation to the inertial system and to the GNSS system antenna position, performing the flight (C) and obtaining LIDAR raw data (1) which are then geometrically calibrated by means of a process of physical and geometrical error correction, starting from the navigation data generated based on the determination (N) of a compensated flight trajectory, LIDAR data which are then validated through a quality control process (I) for obtaining a calibrated point cloud (5), wherefrom the improbable points are removed by statistical control processes (J), and georeferenced in a desired coordinate system, from which the field digital model and the surface digital model are finally obtained.
