A substantially automated system (100) and method (300) for treating Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) for methane avoidance by discharging filtrate with Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)/ Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) that has substantially reduced through the filtration process. The system includes at least one desander (118), at least one vibrating screen (120), at least one thermal homogenous mixing vessel (THMV) (106a), sensors, PLC unit (109), at least one filtration unit (112), and at least one multiphase decanter (110). The desander (118), and vibrating screen (120) initiate pretreatment process of received POME. The THMV (106a) receives pre-treated POME until the THMV (106a) reaches to full. The sensors monitor the temperature of the POME and level of POME in THMV (106a). The PLC unit (109) controls the temperature of the POME and level of POME in THMV (106a). The filtration unit (112) processes POME until pre-defined viscosity of POME is achieved. The PLC unit (109) feeds the POME into THMV (106a) during the processing of POME by the filtration unit (112). The multiphase decanter (110) receives the final treated POME to initiate the centrifuge process. The multiphase decanter (110) feed the heavy phase POME into THMV (106b, 106c) that require filling or to a biogas digester. The PLC unit (109) continues the process until the POME is finished.
