The present invention describes a hands-free or ticketless fare collection system (100, 200) for a entering a designated pay area, such as a mass transit system. Commuters are identified by a face recognition subroutine (144) and commuter identities are additional split up and stored in ID categories according to name, gender, date of birth, race, height, privilege group and so on. Splitting up the commuter identities under different ID categories allow quick and accurate identification of commuters in the commuter ID database (160) and deduction of payment from the commuters account kept in the respective commuter accounts database (170).
