The invention relates to a containment arrangement (1) for storing at least partly depleted nuclear fuel. The arrangement comprises an excavated hole (3, 3') in a rock-type material, in which hole (3, 3') a sealed container (5), holding nuclear fuel assemblies with at least partly depleted nuclear fuel, is positioned. The containment arrangement (1) also comprises a first buffer layer (7) of compressed blocks of bentonite clay, enclosing the container (5). The containment arrangement (1) further comprises a second buffer layer (9), enclosing the first buffer layer (7), the second buffer layer (9) comprising saponite clay. The invention also relates to a method for assembly of such a containment arrangement (1).
