It is disclosed a method for mapping digital signals into an Optical Transport Network. The method comprises the step a) of mapping (2-1; 2-1a, 2-1b, 2-1c) a plurality of input digital signals (Si; 10 1 , 10 2 , ... 10 536 ) into a respective plurality of frames (ODUe- 12 ; 11 1 , 11 2 , ... 11 536 ) of digital signals, said mapping further comprising the insertion of a respective path overhead field (11 1a , 11 2a , ... 11 536a ) into each frame of said plurality of frames of digital signals, wherein each path overhead field carries monitoring information of the quality of the respective frame, comprises the step b) of multiplexing (2d) said plurality of frames of digital signals in order to generate a multiplexed frame (50), comprises the step c) of mapping (3-1) at least a portion of the multiplexed frame (50) into a level zero Optical Channel Payload Unit (51, OPU0), comprises the step d) of mapping (3-1) said level zero Optical Channel Payload Unit (OPU0) into an Optical Channel Data Unit of level zero (ODU0), comprises the step e) of multiplexing (3-2; 3-3; 3-4; 3-5) said level zero Optical Channel Data Unit into an Optical Channel Data Unit of level higher than zero (ODU1; ODU2; ODU3; ODU4), and comprises the step f) of generating an Optical Transport Unit (OTU1; OTU2; OTU3; OTU4) carrying said Optical Channel Data Unit of level higher than zero.
