An applanation head for a Goldmann applanation tonometer having a pressure sensor mounted on the applanation head so as to measure at least one local pressure exerted on a portion of the applanation surface in contact with a flattened cornea, allows to measure accurately the intraocular pressure if an eye as well as the modulus of elasticity (Young's modulus) of the cornea. Methods for calculating accurately the intraocular pressure and the modulus of elasticity in function of the local pressure exerted on a portion of the applanation surface in contact with a flattened cornea and of the overall pressure exerted by an eye pressed against the applanation surface of the Goldmann applanation tonometer are further disclosed.
