A method for evaluating the level of microbial activity of a substrate (9), preferably soil, comprising the following steps: a) preparing one or more biodegradable threads (8); b) tensioning said one or more biodegradable threads (8) with a predefined tension; c) introducing said one or more biodegradable threads (8) tensioned at least partially in said substrate (9); d) leaving said one or more biodegradable threads (8) tensioned in said substrate (9); and e) measuring the elapsed time from the introduction of said one or more tensioned biodegradable yarns (8) into said substrate (9) until the breakage of said one or more tensioned biodegradable yarns (8).
