A method of identifying immune cells of a mammal, comprising the analysis of the methylation status of at least one CpG position in the ccr6 gene, in which a demethylation, when compared with an un-activated T lymphocyte, is indicative of a cell selected from stable activated T lymphocytes, NK cells, memory T lymphocytes, in particular CD4 + or CD8 + memory T lymphocytes and memory cytotoxic T lymphocytes.
