A process for the preparation of lactic acid and hydroxy-3-butenoic acid 2 or its esters from a sugar in the presence of a material metallo-silicate, a metal ion and a solvent, said process comprising contacting sugar with a metallo-silicate material, wherein the metal ion is selected from one or more of the group consisting of potassium, sodium ion, lithium ion, rubidium ion and cesium ions.
