Nanoparticulate phosphate adsorbent based on maghemite or aghemite / magnetite, production and uses thereof

Phosphate adsorbent comprising (i) an iron oxide core comprising a crystalline structure of reverse spinel iron oxide, (ii) a coating selected from (a) monosaccharides or disaccharides or (b) alditols, or mixtures thereof , and (iii) a pharmaceutical excipient selected from polymeric carbohydrates, in which the phosphate adsorbent is in the form of nanoparticles with a particle size of the iron oxide core of less than 20 nm, and in which the content of Iron is 3 to 50% by weight of the total weight of the phosphate adsorbent.
