A method for extending the space (2) below a masonry arch bridge (1), the masonry arch bridge comprising a masonry arch (3) and a filler wall (4) at each end of the masonry arch, the method comprising forming a movable portion (32) of the masonry arch bridge by cutting the filler walls to form a cut (30) on each side of the masonry arch, applying a lifting force to the movable portion to raise the masonry arch to an elevated position and secure the masonry arch to the elevated position.
