Method for determining the myopic potential of a patient comprising: a. analyze a biological sample obtained from the patient to determine the opsin L: M gene haplotype of the patient; and b. correlate the haplotype with a predicted spherical equivalent refraction; in which the opsin L: M gene haplotype is one of haplotypes 1 to 13 as set forth in table 1.
