The composition of the invention, according to a first embodiment, consists essentially of a cerium oxide and a zirconium oxide. According to a second embodiment, this composition is based on a cerium oxide, a zirconium oxide and at least one oxide of a rare earth other than cerium. After a first calcination at 900 ~ C for 4 hours and a second calcination at 1000 ~ C for 10 hours, it has a variation of its specific surface area of at most 20% in the case of the first mode and at most 15% in the case of the second. The composition of the invention can be used as a catalyst, in particular for the treatment of the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines.
