In order to identify with good precision a state of an athlete that is present in a pool, the processor of the method for identifying a state of an athlete or the device for identifying a state of an athlete of the present invention refers to results of a process conducted to detect the athlete, against an image obtained by filming the athlete that is present in the pool, and on the basis of the results of detecting the athlete from the time the athlete was present in a region at an end side of the pool onwards, identifies that a progress direction (500) of the athlete is a direction which is different to a progress direction up until that point in time. In such a way, because the progress direction of an athlete can be identified more accurately, the state of the athlete that is present in the pool can be identified more precisely.
