A multi-functional mainstream end-tidal carbon dioxide sensor comprises a housing (4) and an adapter (1). The housing (4) is detachably connected to the adapter (1). The inside of the housing (4) is a cavity, and is provided with a core for detecting and analyzing end-tidal carbon dioxide. An infrared sensor (6) of the core is correspondingly arranged with a transmission end of an infrared light source (12) of the core. A groove (414) is disposed on the housing between the infrared sensor (6) and the transmission end of the infrared light source (12). By means of the connection of the groove (414) to the adapter (1) a gas chamber for accommodating and detecting carbon dioxide is formed. The adapter (1) comprises an adapter portion (110) and a vent is disposed on the adapter portion (110). The adapter portion (110) is detachably connected to the groove (414). The vent is connected to a nose tube (14) or a breathing circuit. The sensor of the present invention can work in combination with adapters of various specifications to monitor both adult and non-adult, intubated and non-intubated patients, and has a range of functions. Adapters for the sensor of the present invention are easy to change and the sensor is easy to operate and comfortable to wear.
