An apparatus (3) for controlling poppet valves in an internal combustion engine (5), comprising: a first piston (21a), arranged to control a lift of a first inlet poppet valve (23a) of a first combustion chamber (25a); a second piston (21b), arranged to control a lift of a second inlet poppet valve (23b) of the first combustion chamber; a third piston (21c), arranged to control a lift of a first inlet poppet valve (23c) of a second combustion chamber (25b); a fourth piston (21d), arranged to control a lift of a second inlet poppet valve (23d) of the second combustion chamber; a first hydraulic control system (29a) arranged to operate, at different times, the first piston and the third piston, but not the second piston and the fourth piston; and a second hydraulic control system (29b) arranged to operate, at different times, the second piston and the fourth piston, but not the first piston and the third piston.
