The present invention relates to an assembly for collecting fluid during a medical or a surgical operation. The assembly comprises a canister (9) having an openable lid (32) and a collection liner (21). The collection liner (21) comprises a closed bag portion (22) and an inlet (25) for a collection container. The inlet (25) has a first end and a second end, which opens into the bag portion (22). The bag portion (22) is placed inside the canister (9). The first end of the inlet (25) for a collection container extends from between the edge of the canister (9) and the edge of the lid (32) to the outside of the canister (9) when the lid (32) is closed.
