According to the present invention, an archive server installed in an on-premise environment can archive data from a local storage to both an archive in the on-premise environment and a cloud storage. Each set of data to be archived has embedded therein control information provided by a tag, and the archive server retains an archive rule table for determining, on the basis of the control information of each set of data to be archived, whether to archive that set of data to an archive storage in the on-premise environment or the cloud storage. The archive server refers to the control information of a set of data to be archived and the archive rule table, and determines whether to archive that set of data to the archive storage in the on-premise environment or the cloud storage. In this way, the data archive system automatically determines the storage to which to send data to be archived, thus reducing the work required for archiving.
