Disclosed are a holographic waveguide and augmented reality display system and display method. The holographic waveguide comprises: at least one first waveguide transmission module (100), in which n layers of first coupling input gratings (101) and n layers of first coupling output gratings (102) are provided; and at least one second waveguide transmission module (200), in which m layers of second coupling input gratings (201) and m layers of second coupling output gratings (202) are provided. Incident light rays in different directions diffract after same are incident on the first coupling input gratings (101) on different layers, and diffracted light rays of each layer of first coupling input gratings (101) are incident on the first coupling output gratings (102) on the same layer, and are incident on the second coupling input gratings (201) after diffraction. Incident light rays of the second coupling input gratings (201) are incident on the second coupling output gratings (202) on the same layer and diffract, and output expanded light beams. Different waveguide transmission modules expand, along different directions, incident light beams, the input and output gratings on the same layer have the same grating constant, and the coupling input and output gratings on different layers have different grating constants. The holographic waveguide and augmented reality display system has the advantages of having a great exit pupil, large field of view and light weight.
