The method electronically generates a combined set of character strings appropriate for selection as a personalised vehicle number plate by combining a: 1. a plurality of character strings or content derived from or based on user details; 2. a second plurality of character strings or content derived from or based on one or more keywords. The first plurality of character strings are electronically generated by application of a rules-based algorithm and the second plurality of character strings are electronically generated by application of a hybrid-type algorithm. The rules-based and hybrid-type algorithms are combined in the form of a combined algorithm. The generated character strings in the form of possibilities for personalised vehicle number plates are electronically checked for availability.
