The primary goal is to offer maximum flexibility, efficiency, and economics while simultaneously enabling environmentally and sustainably sound practices. A complementary goal is to retain as mcuh of the chemical energy available in the feedstock as possible. A hybrid thermochemical cycle couples staged reforming (1.06, 1.15) with steam methan reforming (1.05) and chlorination (1.09). Hydrogen generated is used to upgrade essentially any carbon feed-stock including bitumen, shale, coal, and biomass. The residues of the upgrading are chlorinated, metals of interest are removed and the remainder is reacted with ammonia solution and carbon dioxide to form carbonate minerals. The combination provides for an emissions free method of producing synthetic crude oil and its derivatives, as well as various valuable metals and fertilizers. Sand and carbonate minerals are potentially the only waste streams.
