Disclosed in the present application are an optical network unit and a method for sending an optical signal by the optical network unit. The method may comprise: generating a data code stream corresponding to each channel according to information about a licensed timeslot, a first code word in the data code stream on each channel carrying first instruction information; and when the first instruction information in the data code stream is detected, generating a message for instructing an optical module to start a laser. By means of the solution, the laser can be started in time when uplink data is sent on a data code stream, and the implementation is simple and effective.
