A base station for a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) array calculates first metrics based on first data rates that are estimated assuming a first clear channel assessment (CCA) mode is used to acquire a channel of an unlicensed frequency band for a plurality of user equipment. The base station calculates second metrics based on second data rates that are estimated assuming a second CCA mode is used to acquire the channel of the unlicensed frequency band for the plurality of user equipment. The base station selects the first or second CCA mode based on the first and second metrics. The base station performs CCA to acquire the channel of the unlicensed frequency band for transmission by the MIMO array according to the selected first or second CCA mode.
