The invention relates to an electric heating system for vehicles, in particular for motor vehicles, comprising an electric heating element (10) which dispenses thermal energy in the event of an electric power flow through the electric heating element (10) during the operation of the vehicle. A control unit (12) is provided which is suitable for allowing a power flow through the electric heating element (10) prior to starting up the vehicle such that the electric heating system can be used as an auxiliary heating system. The invention additionally relates to a method and to a use of an electric heating system.
