An apparatus for processing information according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a database which stores passport information of a plurality of tourists and airline ticket information mapped to the passport information, a communication unit which receives the read passport information from a passport reading apparatus which reads the passport, and a checking unit which searches for passport information corresponding to the received passport information in the database and checks whether or not the tourist is allowed to purchase goods at a duty free shop based on the searched passport information and the airline ticket information mapped to the searched passport information. The communication unit transmits the check result of the checking unit to an external apparatus which indicates whether or not the tourist is allowed to purchase the goods at the duty free shop.
