The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention or treatment of oral mucositis comprising as an active ingredient an extract of Panax ginseng. More particularly, the extract of Panax ginseng extract of the present invention has DPPH radical scavenging activity, protection against cytotoxicity, ROS speicies), inhibition of cell death, and inhibition of cytokine production, thereby effectively treating oral mucositis, one of the side effects caused by chemotherapy and radiation therapy in cancer patients.
