In a UWB communication system that includes a pair of ultra-wideband ("UWB") transceivers, the asynchronous bidirectional ranging method can closely approximate the flight time between transceivers after exchanging only three messages between the transceivers . In an alternative asynchronous bi-directional ranging method, the flight time between transceivers can be estimated close proximity after exchange of only four messages between transceivers.
