摘要

The present invention is based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal with defects inserted while creating two waveguides and resonant cavities. Electromagnetic signals passing through the device are constrained within defects due to the optical band gap associated with the surrounding periodic structure. The main function of the present invention is to control the flow of electromagnetic signals along a communication channel while permitting (on) or blocking (off) its passage. The present invention also alters the direction of propagation of electromagnetic signals up to an angle of 120 degrees, thereby providing greater flexibility in the structure of integrated optical systems. The operating principle of the device is based on the excitation of the dipole mode in the resonant cavity, followed by application of an external DC magnetic field to the magneto-optical material constituting it. In the on state and the off state, the magneto-optical material is magnetized and non-magnetized, respectively.
