According to embodiments of the present invention, provided is an optical transmitter configured to transmit a data sequence over at least two spatial propagation modes through an optical transmission channel in a multi-mode optical fiber transmission system, wherein the transmission system is associated with a predefined value of mode-dependent loss. The optical transmitter comprises: a forward error correction code encoder (22) for encoding data sequence to a codeword vector by applying at least one error correction code; a modulator (23) for determining a symbol set modulated by applying a modulation scheme to the codeword vector; and a space-time encoder (24) for determining a codeword matrix by applying a space-time code to the modulated symbol set.
