Provided is a method of reducing a read buffer size requirement in an NVMe-based solid-state drive. A data storage system includes a non-volatile memory express (NVMe) host, and an NVMe device. The NVMe device includes an NVMe device controller, and the NVMe device controller fetches data from a flash by receiving a read command from the NVMe host, and a portion of the data fetched from the flash is arranged in a read buffer queue within the NVMe device controller. The read buffer queue includes multiple segments for accommodating the respective parts of the data fetched from the flash, and orders the NVMe host to place the portion of the data in the read buffer queue.
