Disclosed are an energy storage system considering battery pack expandability and a control method thereof. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the energy storage system comprises: a battery pack including at least one battery, wherein the battery can be expanded to a certain number; a charging unit charging the battery of the battery pack; a battery management system (BMS) detecting the number of batteries of the battery pack and controlling charging and discharge of the battery pack based on the detected number of batteries; and a power conversion system interconnecting power of the battery pack with power of a system, charging the battery using the power of the system, and discharging the power of the battery pack to the system.
