The present invention relates to a method for detecting a mosaic based on edge projection in video data, which accurately detects lattice mosaic areas used to hide certain areas in variously inputted images on the basis of edge projection. The method comprises: (a) a step of extracting an edge from the input image, detecting a candidate area of a mosaic by using the extracted edge, detecting a line edge in which extracted edges are continuously connected, projecting detected line edges onto a coordinate axis, estimating the size of a mosaic block by obtaining an interval of projected coordinates, and selecting, as a candidate area of a mosaic, an area incuding pixels of coordinates positioned at an interval of the estimated size of the block; and (b) a step of detecting an actual mosaic area by removing a non-mosaic area by using a geometric feature. According to the method of the present invention, areas corresponding to mosaic blocks can be detected more accurately even in various kinds of input images compared to conventional other detection methods.
