The present invention relates to an upconversion nanoparticle for bio-imaging, which comprises: an upconversion phosphor particle; and an alginate-based amphiphilic polymer functionalizing the surface of the upconversion phosphor particle. The surface of the upconversion nanoparticle for bio-imaging is modified by a new amphiphilic polymer synthesized based on an alginic acid on the surface to provide the nanoparticle of the present invention with excellent upconversion light emission properties, high water dispersibility, outstanding stability, a targeting function specific to a cell such as cancer cells, and biocompatibility, thereby enabling the nanoparticle to be helpfully used as a marker for bio-imaging in vivo as well as in vitro.
