A phase change material / air coupled hierarchical battery thermal management system is disclosed, which relates to battery thermal management techniques. A plurality of phase change material containers filled with different phase change materials are disposed between the batteries, respectively. A plurality of rows of outer ribs having different densities and lengths are distributed at intervals on the front side and rear side of each phase change material container and the plurality of rows of inner ribs are disposed at intervals on the inner side plate of the phase change material container. The inner ribs located away from the battery electrode have a higher density than the inner ribs near the battery electrode. Combining two thermal management techniques, phase-transform material cooling and air-cooling technology, can effectively remove the heat generated by the battery. Using a hierarchical arrangement of phase change material and fin, the temperature difference between a single battery or between batteries can be effectively reduced, and the temperature uniformity of a single battery / battery group can also be improved.
