The atlas packing method includes receiving a three-dimensional (3D) mesh including a plurality of triangles representing surfaces of one or more objects; For each individual triangle, determining the normal of the individual triangles and classifying the individual triangles into one of six directions along the positive and negative directions of the x-, y-, and z-directions; Classifying the triangles of each individual direction into one or more layers that are orthogonal to the respective directions; Identifying, for each individual layer, one or more connected components; Projecting each individual connected component onto a plane orthogonal to the respective direction to obtain a corresponding projected two-dimensional (2D) connected component; Cutting the projected 2D connected component into one or more sub-components; Packing boundary boxes of all sub-components into one or more atlas; And for each individual triangle of each sub-component, copying the texture of the corresponding triangle of the 3D mesh into a separate triangle.
