The present invention relates to a protective helmet. Embodiments of the present invention have been developed to provide a method of manufacturing a protective helmet, comprising a protective helmet, a protective helmet component, and a protective helmet having an expandable bell opening. For example, an embodiment is described with reference to a two-part helmet having a hinged connection that allows for insertion or removal of a human head, allowing bell opening expansion. One embodiment provides a manufacturing method whereby the protective helmet is formed into a single piece and then the interlocking edge member is cut into a subsequently applied shell position to facilitate re-connection of the shell along the interlocking edge.
