The invention described herein is an apparatus and method for operating an eye protection device using an auto-dimming filter (ADF). The operating voltage is alternately applied to a pair of control terminals of the ADF device circuit during a series of successive processes in which the first polarity voltage is applied to the terminal pair and inverted. The delay period is provided while the polarities are alternately applied. In some embodiments, the ground potential is applied to both terminals of the terminal pair during the delay period.
