The present invention relates to a system and method for adaptive RAID geometries. A computer system includes data storage arrays and client computers coupled together via a network. Data storage arrays use solid-state drives and Flash memory cells for data storage. A storage controller in the data storage array is configured to set a first subset of storage devices for use in a first RAID layout that includes a first set of redundant data. The storage controller further configures a second subset of storage devices for use in a second RAID layout comprising a second redundant data set. The controller also sets up additional devices not included in either the first subset or the second subset to store redundant data for both the first RAID layout and the second RAID layout .
