In a method of a communication network, an access point transmits a sounding packet to a plurality of client stations using a multiple-input multiple-output antenna structure. The client station determines the channel estimate of the sounding packet, but determines the channel estimate of the portion of the entire sounding packet to avoid processing the entire packet. The resulting partial estimate is transmitted to the access point for use in transmit beamforming. In another example, the client station transmits a reverse link sounding packet over a portion of the channel with a bandwidth that is less than the sounding packet, and determines a partial channel estimate and transmit beamforming condition from the access point.
