The present invention provides a visual cryptography-based mutual authentication method and a controlling method of a device for performing visual cryptography-based mutual authentication, which recognize an authentication code in a visual cryptography image by an optical character recognition (OCR) manner to perform mutual authentication. The visual cryptography-based mutual authentication method shares a first image between a device to perform the mutual authentication and a server, stores the first image in advance, generates a first authentication code at the server if a mutual authentication request is received from the device, generates a second image in which the first authentication code is identified when the first image is overlapped with the first authentication code, transmits the second image to the device, overlaps the first image and the second image at the device, identifies the authentication code from the overlapped image by the OCR manner, transmits a second authentication code which is the identified authentication code to the server, and compares the first authentication code and the second authentication code at the server to determine whether the mutual authentication with the device is successful.
