Large-scale look-up tables (LUTs) are required for non-linear compression of high-precision image data (e.g., 12 bits per subpixel). A smaller, tunable circuit is disclosed that performs compression using a linear compression interval on a periodic basis. The segmental linear data compression process is configured to minimize duplication of a plurality of used high precision value points to one corresponding low precision data value point. The compressed data includes image definition data that is processed for display on an atypical display screen that can be stored adjacent to other image data in the frame buffer in which the composite image is assembled.
