Methods and systems deal with a coarse-to-fine approach for estimating the pose of a human head. The method is based on the interpretation that the head pose is reliably estimated by features based on whole and part. Initially, the method obtains a head image that has been clipped by some foreground and background separation techniques, and a clipped head image that is used by the system for further approximate estimation. The method includes a quick step by computer to estimate a rough head pose by estimating the pose of a portion of the face, and further, an improved head pose. The geometric technique of placing the partial position with a faster acquired hair contour ultimately returns the correct head pose. The proposed method is also robust against facial expressions, an important task in pose estimation.
