A first signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) average is determined for a first set of symbols of at least one or more first symbols in one or more packets. The second SNR average is determined for a second set of symbols of at least one or more second symbols in one or more packets. A first difference between the first SNR average and the second SNR average is determined. In response to determining that the first difference exceeds the SNR threshold, a determination is made as to whether a first channel event occurs in one or more packets in at least the first symbol set and the second symbol set. In response to determining that a first channel event occurs, a determination is made whether to maintain the first data rate or a second data rate higher than the first data rate.
